This centuries old mining community is considered a ghost town today. The grand haciendas of the mining families stand in decay and ruin today, but their former glory can easily be seen. There are also mines, ancient temples and even ruins of Jesuit missionary outposts. This is an excellent day trip from San Miguel de Allende.

PEÑA DE BERNAL AND TEQUISQUIAPAN:
Bernal is picturesque town settled in the shadow of Pena de Bernal, which is a huge monolith and considered the second biggest solid rock in Latin America. Located in the state of Queretaro, the local people are also widely known for their crafts and fine food. If you like San Miguel, you will love Tequisquipan. With large plazas, craft markets and sidewalk cafes offer a colonial feel, but the best part is that their local hot springs are actually located in town. Tequisquiapan artisans are especially known for their rattan wood furniture, and we will visit their beautiful showrooms.

We will be visiting the Castle, the famous crafts market, Temple of San Sebastian, the tavern and the Chapel of the Souls. In Tequisquiapan, we visit the main plaza and the Crafts market, place where you will see their handiwork with the rattan furniture.

MORELIA AND PATZCUARO:
Morelia is the capital of the state of Michoacán whose colonial architecture is so unique and special it is considered a cultural patrimony of Mexico. Grand plazas seem to be on ever corner, making it easy to see why it is a World Heritage site. Morelia is also the birthplace of the purépecha culture. Patzcuaro, another jewel of the colonial architecture. Here, breath taking Baroque-style religious monuments, adobe buildings and wonderful tile give the city a singular aspect where artistic harmony fills the plazas and fountains.

San Miguel Allende is a charming city known for its art and architecture. Our walking tour is the best way to get to know this charming place, especially with our local guides. This city has been a key location in Mexico's history, especially during the first revolution. Another big aspect of San Miguel is the art schools which have been fundamental part of the tourist development. GUANAJUATO:
Guanajuato is one of the most beautiful cities in the center of Mexico, and the capital of colonial Mexico. It has a fusion of architecture of European and Moorish-style, making for dramatic plazas connected by unique vaulted arches. Another unique aspect is that there is an underground system of tunnels for traffic, leaving the above ground streets open to nice strolls around this city full of dramatic views.
This city was founded in the XVI century. Is located in the Sierra Madre, no matter where you look, the mountains provide back drops that will leave you enchanted. This city is also the birthplace of Diego Riveria, whose childhood home is now a public museum. Being the capital of the state of Guanajuato, there are also several historical museums, especially those of old mining techniques, and the ever popular Mummy Museum.

DOLORES HIDALGO:
Dolores Hidalgo is a city of great historical importance. This is where Padre Hidalgo gave the El Grito, or the cry for independence, which spurred the first Mexican revolution in 1810. It is now known for its incredibly beautiful and diverse ceramic industry, famous throughout Mexico. This is an excellent day trip from San Miguel de Allende, since the city located right next door.

Parish de Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores, the Historical Home of Miguel Hidalgo, the enchanting main plaza (home of the world's oddest ice cream), colonial haciendas and a craft shop of one of the local ceramic artists. On the return trip to San Miguel Allende, we visit the World Heritage Site of the Sanctuary of Atotonilco.

TEOTIHUACAN:
Teotihuacán, a city of the ancient Mexicas, literally means “the home of the gods”, and in wider sense, it came to mean “where the men became gods”. This is one of the best preserved pre-Hispanic cities, known for the quantity and quality of their monuments. This is without a doubt the most important archaeological area in the Mexican highland north of Mexico City. Teotihuacán reached its golden around 750 AD, but then fell into decline. It was later abandoned for reasons still unknown, but today remains intact.
In its time of splendor, around 500 AD, the city covered about 20 km2. The quantity of its temples and rooms, are impressive and housed between 120,000 and 200,000 people. At the height of its power, it was one of the largest and most advanced cities in Mesoamerica.

QUERETARO:
This colonial city has retained its historical monuments even though it has become a major industrial city in Mexico. Know for its almost Moorish Baroque architecture, they have preserved their churches, houses, streets and squares which seem to transport you back in time. They also have an ancient aqueduct that runs through the center of town. Queretaro is also known worldwide for their opal and amethysts mines.
