Parrish of San Miguel Archangel
The original construction of the Parrish of San Miguel Archangel dates back to the 17th century but the facade itself was completely rebuilt in 1880 by Zeferino Gutierrez, who was inspired by the cathedrals of Europe.

Popular Events & Celebrations in San Miguel

San Miguel is also distinguished  by its celebrations  religiosus and civics ; also cultural events of Music, Teatre, Dance, and Painting.

  • New Year’s celebration. Celebration of New Year in San Miguel, with music and fireworks in the Main Plaza. (Night, December 31st)
  • Christ of the Conquest  (Señor de la Conquista). This is an Indigena celebration with Conchero dancers, and fireworks in the main square of the Parish. (celebrated on  the First Friday of March)
  • Baroque Music Festival.  For this festival are invited international musicians and the concerts are held in a beautiful and intimate settings, transporting the audience at the age of the nobility to make each concert an unique experience (February & March).
  • San Antonio Abad’s Celebration. This day takes place the traditional parade of Los Locos, where people wearing funny costumes go dancing in the streets giving candies to the spectators. (Sunday following at June 13th).
  • The San Miguel Chamber Music Festival’s. The largest Chamber Music Festival in Mexico, gather fans from Unites States, Europe and Latin America to enjoy musical performances that bring the highest level of talent from all around the world. (July & August).
  • International Film Festival Expresion en Corto. The Expresión en Corto International Film Festival is held during the final week of July in the cities of San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato. The festival estimates an attendance of over 83,000 total audience members and receives over 2,000 films from more than 85 participating countries in its international Competition.
  • Grito de Independencia. This event is celebrated on September 15 at 11:00pm in the main square, the Mayor of San Miguel lead a speech naming the main heroes of the Independence of Mexico and the people respond to him with a "Viva".  At the end of the speech remains the party with fireworks and the National Anthem.
  • Alborada and Celebration of San Miguel Archangel Patron saint of the town. The main religious festivity is celebrated each year the weekend following the September 29th, so the date can vary between September and October.

    This Festivity starts with La Alborada, a Friday night full of Music and fireworks, in the main square, this ends with Las Mañanitas to San Miguel Archangel. The following Saturday many communities bring to the Saint offerings called “Xuchiles” made with flowers, bread and cucharilla, and these communities are accompanied with conchero dancers up to the main square.

    On Sunday there is a parade of dancers from Zacatecas, Morelos, Veracruz, Jalisco, Queretaro and other cities, just to offer their dance to the Saint.These 3 days we can enjoy of the fireworks in the main plaza in the hights.
  • Jazz Festival. The last week of November, the city hosts this festival with performances by national and international Jazz bands and artists.
